THE WORLD’S FIRST SELF-LEARNING CAR

Jaguar Land Rover are developing technology to create the world’s first self-learning car.

Designed to reduce driver distraction and take the chore out of driving, the self-learning car uses the latest artificial intelligence techniques to ‘learn’ driver’s habits. Identifying the driver from their key fob or phone, the car learns driver preferences such as if they listen to a certain radio station in the morning but a CD in the evening and implements the choices automatically.

The first predictions can be made after just two weeks of the vehicle being used, thanks to an algorithm which continuously learns and improves the automated functions over time.

Demonstrated at Jaguar Land Rover’s Future Tech day in Gaydon, UK in July guests were able to test the features in a replica ‘home to work’ journey.

Scenarios demonstrated include the use of predictive massage seats, automatic media source selection and an intelligent phone reminder, ensuring no driver leaves home without their essentials. All data learned by the vehicle is stored in a cloud service, which can be permanently deleted upon request from the vehicle owner.

Vitally, the self-learning feature is an opt-in service for customers, who can override predictions at any time. A key part of the algorithm ensures that feedback from the driver is always prioritised, meaning that the driver retains control at all times.
