The 22nd of March 2015 is World Water Day and in order to mark this we take a closer look at some of The Red Cross’s many initiatives which Land Rover support.
As a business Land Rover are committed to making a positive contribution to society. By focusing on vital resources pertinent both to our business and to our communities, our Global Corporate Social Responsibility Programme aims to bring positive change to the lives of 12 million people worldwide, by 2020.
Water is one such critical resource on which we all rely. For those of us with instant access to fresh, clean water it is easy to take this for granted. Vital for health, sanitation and agriculture many communities struggle to grow the crops they need to survive and are impacted by illnesses associated with the lack of access to clean water. Here we take a closer look at some of the countries benefitting from the work of the Red Cross.
The Austrian and South Sudan Red Cross are being supported by Land Rover to reach over 58,000 people in South Sudan, bringing them access to clean water and educating communities about safe hygiene practices and disease prevention. The rehabilitation of water pumps has been a core part of this project along with the training of community leaders in the maintenance of these pumps, meaning communities are guaranteed access to clean water for years to come.
In Niger, a country recognised as one of the most vulnerable in the world, Land Rover are supporting the Irish Red Cross and the Red Cross Society of Niger, with a programme which will bring access to clean water to more than 60,000 people by 2018. The effects of this project will go beyond just health and hygiene, but also mean that children, instead of spending their days collecting water, can attend school, benefitting their communities in the long run.
In Uganda 29% of the population don’t have access to clean water and only 34% have access to a proper toilet. As a result waterborne diarrhoeal diseases are prevalent, especially in the under 5s. Thanks to one project 30,000 people have been given access to 40 new water points providing communities with access to clean water.
Part of our ongoing work with the Red Cross is to help improve education about hygiene. This was a core element of our project in Uganda where 1,375 health promoters were trained across 38 communities and 575 hand washing facilities constructed, allowing people to put what they had learned into practice.
As we mark World Water Day we look back on these projects and the positive impact they have had on thousands of lives.
